Why frog shipping requires different considerations than reptile shipping
Most commonly shipped reptiles — ball pythons, corn snakes, leopard geckos — have keratinized scales that provide some protection against moisture loss and temperature variation. Frogs have thin, permeable skin that absorbs water and loses moisture rapidly in dry conditions. This makes desiccation a primary shipping risk that reptile shippers who are new to amphibians may underestimate.
The shipping setup for a frog must address two variables simultaneously: temperature (similar to reptile shipping) and humidity (specific to amphibians). A perfect temperature inside a dry container is not a successful frog shipment — it is a recipe for desiccation-related stress or death. Getting both right requires understanding the role of substrate, ventilation design, and container moisture content.
Choosing the right container for the species
The standard container for shipping small frog species is a ventilated deli cup — a round plastic container with a snap-on lid. The ventilation holes allow gas exchange (the frog breathes oxygen and produces carbon dioxide inside the container) while limiting moisture loss. The design of the ventilation pattern matters: a single small hole or a few small holes allow adequate gas exchange. Dozens of large holes create too much airflow and cause rapid desiccation.
For larger species like pacman frogs, a larger container is required — one that allows the frog to sit naturally without pressing against the walls or lid. Cramped conditions during transit cause stress and can cause physical injury in larger, heavier species. Choose a container that is appropriately sized for the specific animal, not the smallest container that technically closes.
Substrate: moisture management inside the container
Moist sphagnum moss is the most widely used substrate for shipping dart frogs and most tropical frog species. Sphagnum holds moisture effectively, does not compact around the animal, and provides a natural humidity environment inside the cup. The preparation is important: saturate the moss, then squeeze out excess water until it is moist but not dripping. Waterlogged substrate in a sealed cup creates anaerobic conditions and drowning risk.
For pacman frogs and other burrowing species, moist coconut fiber (coco coir) provides a denser substrate that allows the frog to burrow naturally during transit. The same principle applies: moist but not waterlogged. A layer of substrate approximately one-third the height of the container is typically sufficient — enough to hold moisture without burying the animal.
Temperature management for frog shipments
Most tropical frog species have a safe transit temperature range of approximately 68–78°F. This is a tighter range than many reptiles, and frog shippers need to be more careful about temperature extremes at both ends. Cold stress in frogs begins at lower temperatures and progresses more rapidly than in many reptile species. Heat stress in frogs — particularly for thin-skinned species — also accelerates more quickly.
In winter, a 40-hour heat pack inside an EPS foam liner is typically appropriate for frog shipments. The pack should be positioned against the inner wall of the liner — not against the frog's container — and the liner should be high-quality with at least 1.5-inch walls. In summer, a cool pack is required for most frog shipments, combined with hub pickup to avoid delivery truck and porch heat exposure. Do not freeze the cool pack solid.

Timing and routing for frog shipments
The timing and routing considerations for frog shipments are the same as for all live animal FedEx shipments: ship Monday through Wednesday, use hub pickup, and check weather at both origin and destination before every shipment. For frog shippers, the summer weather sensitivity may be more acute than for some reptile shippers — thin-skinned amphibians stress faster in heat.
Hub pickup is particularly valuable for frog shipments because it eliminates porch exposure, which is the most unpredictable temperature exposure point in the delivery chain. Pre-shipment frog preparation
Frogs should not be fed for 24–48 hours before shipping. A frog that has eaten recently will defecate in the shipping container, which creates sanitation issues and can stress the animal. Fasting before shipment is standard practice for amphibian shipping. The animal should otherwise be in good health — no signs of disease, injury, or abnormal behavior — before being placed in a shipping container.
Hydration before shipping is also important for amphibians. A frog that is well-hydrated before packing has more moisture reserves to draw on during transit than one that is mildly dehydrated at the time of packing. A brief soak in clean, dechlorinated water for 15–30 minutes the night before shipping can help ensure the animal starts the transit in good condition.
Shipping multiple frogs in the same package
Shipping multiple frogs of the same species together is sometimes appropriate and sometimes not, depending on the species and the specific animals. Small, social dart frog species can often share a ventilated deli cup during a short overnight transit without significant stress. Territorial species, larger species, or animals of different sizes should ship separately to prevent aggression or injury.
When shipping multiple frogs in one package, each group should be in its own sealed container inside the foam liner — not loose together inside the liner. Even species that cohabitate in captivity should be in separate, secured containers during shipping. A loose frog inside the foam liner without a container can dry out, injure itself, or cause other problems during transit.
What to tell the recipient about receiving shipped frogs
The recipient of a live frog shipment needs specific instructions about receipt. Frogs should be opened and acclimated carefully — they should not be immediately placed in their permanent enclosure after opening a package that may be significantly warmer or cooler than the enclosure. A brief acclimation period in a room-temperature environment before transfer reduces temperature shock.
The recipient should also inspect the frogs for signs of shipping stress — lethargy, abnormal posture, or visible injury — and monitor them closely for the first 24–48 hours after arrival. A DOA (dead on arrival) claim requires documentation within a specific time window, so the recipient should inspect and photograph the animals immediately upon opening if there is any concern about the condition of the shipment.
